So, here’s the story of my biggest professional credit:
It’s late in the morning and I’m driving through the hills north of Hollywood when Ben calls.
Something has to be up, because Ben usually texts me. We say what’s up, but then:
“So…how is your metal bass playing?”
“Ha, not something you’d pay me for!” I blurt out laughing. I’ve never played metal in my career.
“Let me ask you again…”
Wait — is this what I think it is??
“Dude, why are you calling me? There’s like 30 better guys for this.”
“Listen man, you are the only person I’m calling.”
I’d known Ben Thomas for almost 7 years, watching him go from a college student recording local rap artists to an elite recording engineer working for multi-platinum artist Lil Uzi Vert. Ben planned to produce a cover of System of a Down’s classic “Chop Suey!” for Uzi’s next album, so he was tapping into his network of great musicians:
John Legend’s musical director on keys.
A 3x Grammy nominee on guitar.
Armani White’s touring drummer (he had that viral song “Billie Eilish”).
AND Mitch Beer — no big credits, no big tours.
So why me?
